Discover the adventurous underwater world of the Oosterschelde!
Zeeland is known for its expansive beaches and delicious mussels, but the province’s greatest treasure lies beneath the water. The Oosterschelde offers one of the most adventurous diving experiences in all of the Netherlands. From Oosterscheldepark de Stelhoeve in Wemeldinge, you’ll be at the water’s edge in no time with your diving gear, ready to dive into this unique underwater landscape!
Enormous underwater biodiversity
This unique dive site is nationally renowned for its incredibly rich biodiversity.
What might you encounter underwater?
The Oosterschelde is home to a vast number of lobsters and various species of fish, such as sea bass, sole, and garfish.
These are fascinating cephalopods. It’s a spectacular sight, especially in the spring, when the cuttlefish migrate to shallow waters to mate and lay their eggs.
In addition to larger marine life, the seafloor is richly adorned with anemones and beautiful sponges. You can also find seahorses there.

Dive Sites for Every Level
Whether you’ve just earned your certification or have been diving for years, the dive sites in the Oosterschelde range from accessible, shallow locations for less experienced divers to highly challenging depths for true experts. In addition to admiring the rich flora and fauna, you can also go wreck diving, such as to the well-known “Galjoen zonder Poen” wreck. Furthermore, famous hotspots like the Zeeland Bridge and the Plompe Toren are immensely popular dive sites in these waters.
What previous divers asked us:
What is the temperature of the water?
What is the temperature of the water?
From a freezing 4°C in the depths of winter to an almost tropical 20°C in the height of summer: the water temperature in the Oosterschelde fluctuates considerably. This calls for proper preparation and the right wetsuit! But whether it’s warm or cold, the real boss underwater is the tide. The currents change diving conditions by the hour, making tight planning crucial. An up-to-date tide table is therefore indispensable for determining when the water is calm and you can safely go underwater.
What equipment do I need for diving?
What equipment do I need for diving?
Here's what you'll need for open-water diving in the Oosterschelde:
- A 7 mm wetsuit (to keep you warm);
- Snorkel
- Fins
- Regulator
- BCD
- Diving tank
- Mask
Is a diving certification required in the Oosterschelde?
Is a diving certification required in the Oosterschelde?
Yes. Because this is a dynamic tidal waterway, currents play a major role. Even at the specially selected, calm locations for beginners, you really need to know what you’re doing. It is therefore irresponsible to cross the dike without a certification (at least Open Water Diver).
How is the visibility underwater?
How is the visibility underwater?
Visibility in the Oosterschelde is constantly changing. On average, you can expect excellent visibility of about 2 to 5 meters, but on absolutely perfect days (in calm weather and around the tide change), it can easily reach up to 10 meters! Sometimes the water is a bit “greener” due to algal blooms in early summer, or a bit murkier after a heavy storm because the seabed gets churned up. But don’t worry: with a good dive light in hand, the bright colors of the anemones and the claws of the lobsters always stand out perfectly!
